Why your business isn't showing up in AI answers

You asked ChatGPT or Google's AI about your trade and somebody else was named. Here are the eight usual causes, in the order to check them, each with a test you can run yourself in about five minutes.

Published 10 September 2026

It is usually one of eight things, and most businesses have more than one. Roughly in the order to check them: the AI crawlers are blocked, the pages are blank without JavaScript, the site is missing from Bing, Google does not rank the page yet, a setting tells Google not to quote it, nothing independent mentions the business, no page answers the question being asked, or the content is out of date. Each is below with a quick test and the fix. Being missing is the normal starting point, so none of this means something is badly wrong.

Being missing is the normal case

Ranking on Google and being named by an assistant are now separate achievements. One study of local searches found ChatGPT recommends about 1.2% of business locations, against 35.9% that appear in Google's local pack, and only around 45% of businesses that win Google's map pack also turn up in AI recommendations.

Our own site is a fair example. Bing's AI Performance report, the only first-party record of AI citations that exists, logged zero citations for systemroutes.com from 26 August to 7 September 2026, its first two weeks. For a domain a few weeks old that is exactly what should happen. The checks below make sure that when it changes, nothing on your side is in the way.

The eight causes at a glance

#CauseFive-minute test
1AI crawlers are blockedOpen yoursite.com/robots.txt and look for OAI-SearchBot, PerplexityBot or a blanket Disallow
2Pages are blank without JavaScriptView the page source and search it for a sentence from the middle of the page

4Google does not rank the page yetSearch the customer's question on Google and see where you appear
5A setting tells Google not to quote youSearch the page source for nosnippet or max-snippet
6Nothing independent mentions youSearch your business name in quotes and ignore your own site
7No page answers the question askedFind the one sentence on your site that answers what a customer actually types
8The content is out of dateCheck the last-updated date on the pages you want quoted

Roughly the order to check them in. The first three stop everything else from mattering.

1. The AI crawlers are blocked

Each assistant reads the web with its own crawler, and each can be blocked separately. OpenAI's documentation is plain about the consequence: block OAI-SearchBot and your site cannot appear in ChatGPT's search answers.

It usually happens by accident: a security plugin, a firewall preset, a robots.txt copied from another site. From 15 September 2026, Cloudflare's new defaults block AI training and agent crawlers on pages that carry advertising, and a site owner who reacts by blocking AI crawlers broadly can end up blocking Googlebot and Bingbot too, because both are multi-purpose crawlers.

The fix: allow OAI-SearchBot, PerplexityBot, Claude-SearchBot, Googlebot and Bingbot explicitly. Blocking training crawlers such as GPTBot is a business choice, not a fault.

2. The pages are blank without JavaScript

No major AI crawler runs JavaScript. That was measured across more than 500 million crawler requests. Google renders pages; ChatGPT, Claude and Perplexity do not.

If your words only appear once scripts have run, as on many page builders and single-page apps, those assistants receive an empty shell and have nothing to quote.

The fix: make sure the text is in the HTML the server sends. On most platforms that means server-side rendering or a static build, not a rewrite of the site.

This one check settles more cases than any other. A good-looking site that renders entirely in the browser is invisible to the assistants your buyers are asking.

3. The site is missing from Bing

ChatGPT's search draws heavily on Bing's index, and Microsoft Copilot is built on it, so a site Google knows but Bing does not is missing from a large share of AI answers. Perplexity keeps its own index, so checking one assistant tells you little about the others.

The fix: verify the site in Bing Webmaster Tools, which imports everything from Google Search Console in one step, submit the sitemap, and use IndexNow so new pages reach Bing in minutes rather than weeks.

4. Google does not rank the page yet

Google's own guidance is that there is no special markup for AI Overviews: a page has to be indexed and eligible to show a snippet, and in practice the pages cited are mostly ones that already rank well for the question.

A new domain typically takes three to nine months to rank competitively. The shortcuts sold for this, bought links, expired domains and mass AI-written pages, get sites suppressed rather than cited.

The fix: answer specific, longer questions first. Google breaks one search into many smaller ones behind the scenes, so a page that fully answers a narrow question can be cited before it ranks for the broad one.

5. A setting tells Google not to quote you

The nosnippet rule, data-nosnippet attributes and a very small max-snippet all limit what Google may show from a page, and Google applies them to AI Overviews and AI Mode as well. They are sometimes added by SEO plugins or templates and then forgotten.

The fix: remove them from pages you want quoted, and keep them only where you genuinely do not want text reused.

6. Nothing independent mentions you

Across 75,000 brands, mentions of a brand around the web correlated with appearing in AI answers about three times as strongly as backlinks did. Assistants recommend what other sources already talk about.

For businesses that sell services, directories and review sites carry much of this weight when someone asks for a recommendation.

The fix: complete the directory profiles your buyers use, ask real clients for reviews, and get named in the places your industry reads. Never buy or invent reviews; it is against the law in most markets and the platforms remove them.

7. No page answers the question being asked

Assistants quote passages, not whole pages. A service page that describes what you do in general terms rarely contains the one sentence that answers what a buyer actually typed. One analysis found 55% of AI citations come from the top 30% of a page.

The fix: write the question as a heading and answer it in the first two sentences underneath. Put the answer before the explanation, and include the specifics: a number, a timeframe, a comparison.

8. The content is out of date

Assistants favour recent material. One analysis found content under three months old was around three times more likely to be cited.

The fix: put a visible last-updated date on pages that carry facts, and refresh the pages that matter at least every quarter. A new date without new content does not count.

How long it takes once the causes are fixed

Perplexity and Bing-based answers pick up changes fastest, often within weeks. Google's AI Overviews follow Google's rankings, so they move on Google's timescale.

Anyone who guarantees a citation, or a date for one, is guessing: nobody controls what an assistant says. What you can control is that nothing on your side stops it.

Check the first three causes before spending anything. They are free to test, common, and any one of them on its own is enough to keep a business out of every AI answer.
